How long will a power station run a sump pump?

Draws

2,900W

3 to 5h

A pump runs in bursts. At 10 to 15 minutes of pumping an hour, as in a wet spell, a 1,024 Wh unit covers about 3 to 5 hours and the largest that can start it, the Zendure SuperBase V6400 (6,438 Wh), about 20 to 29 hours; pumping without a stop, the 1,024 Wh unit lasts 47 min. 36 of 56 units can start it.

A 3/10 horsepower sump pump draws about 1,116 W running (Zoeller's 9.7 A at 115 V) and up to 2,900 W for an instant at every start (a power-station maker's chart; Zoeller publishes no start figure). It runs in short bursts, so two hours of pumping can cover a long wet day.

Hours on every unit

Rated Wh × 0.85 ÷ 1,116 W, on a full charge with no reserve; hours of cover divide that by the share of each hour it runs (10 to 15 minutes). A unit whose output or surge cannot start a sump pump shows a dash.

What changes these hours

A pump on a hardwired circuit needs a transfer switch or inlet fitted by an electrician; a plug-in pump goes straight into the station. Every start needs the surge, so a unit that cannot start it is no use however large its battery.

The 0.85 allowance covers the inverter's conversion losses on average; at very small loads its own idle draw takes a larger share, and at very large ones the battery delivers a little less. Cold batteries hold less, and an older battery holds less than its rating. To plan a whole day with other devices and 20% headroom, use the calculator with 2 hours of a sump pump already added.

Also: home backup, connecting to house circuits, and every device.

Questions buyers ask

How many watts does a sump pump use?

Sump pump, 3/10 HP submersible: 1,116 W running, 2,900 W to start. Your own model's label or manual has its figure; put it into the calculator's custom row to size for exactly yours.

What size power station do I need for 2 hours of a sump pump?

3,150 Wh of rated capacity by the calculator's arithmetic (device watts × hours ÷ 0.85, plus 20% headroom), with at least 2,900 W of surge. 9 tracked units clear it.
