Questions buyers ask

What size portable power station do I need?

Add up the watts of what you will run times the hours, divide by 0.85 for the inverter, add 20% headroom, and check that the station's continuous and surge output cover the largest device. The watt-hour calculator does the sum from device draws in maker specs; the use pages above are pre-set.

How are the picks chosen?

From the maker's published figures and our own arithmetic on them. A pick for a use must hold that use's watt-hours and start its largest appliance; among the models that do, price, weight, recharge input and chemistry decide, and each card says when to choose the alternative instead. We have not tested these units ourselves, and other publishers' test results are not used. How we check gives every rule.

Which brand is best?

None is best across the board. At each size the brands trade price per watt-hour, output, weight, solar input and expandability against each other, which is why the picks are by use and size rather than by brand. The brands page and the brand-versus-brand pages show the ranges side by side.

Is a bigger unit always better value?

Usually cheaper per watt-hour, and expandable units let you grow later. But capacity you carry and never use is weight and money, and a large unit refills more slowly from the same panel. Size to what you will run, then look one class up only if its price per Wh drops sharply.

Can a power station run a house?

It runs the loads that matter in an outage: a refrigerator, a router, medical devices, lights and phones, for as long as its capacity allows. It does not run central air, an electric range or a water heater. The home backup page sizes the realistic kit.

Runtime is rated capacity × 0.85 ÷ watts. Check startup draw and connections separately. Prices are the maker's, with the day they were checked.
